Statement on Governor Baker’s Endorsement of Senator Susan Collins

BOSTON, Mass–Rebecca Hart Holder, the Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, the Commonwealth’s leading grassroots, pro-choice advocacy organization, issued the following statement on Governor Baker’s endorsement of Senator Susan Collins for reelection:

“It’s shameful that Governor Baker would claim Susan Collins— the Senator who gave Justice Kavanaugh his seat on the Supreme Court— is the “pro-women” candidate. It’s impossible to be “pro-women” when you confirm an anti-choice Justice to the nation’s highest court. By casting the deciding vote that elevated Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, Senator Collins opened the floodgates to attacks on reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy across the country.

“Governor Baker’s endorsement of Susan Collins should be of no surprise. Charlie Baker has stood by anti-choice, Trumpian Republicans like Susan Collins before. Protecting a woman’s right to choose is essential and Susan Collins has failed to do that when women needed her most.

“A pro-choice majority in the United States Senate is critical to preserving and expanding reproductive freedom across the country. Governor Baker is out of step with the majority of Americans who support reproductive freedom. He betrayed women and pregnant people for the sake of his party. Frankly, it’s disappointing.”
