Statement on Carol Doherty’s Special Election Win
BOSTON, Mass. – Rebecca Hart Holder, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, the Commonwealth’s leading grassroots, pro-choice political advocacy organization, issued the following statement on Carol Doherty’s election to the Massachusetts State House of Representatives:
“I am thrilled to congratulate Carol Doherty on her victory. Representative-elect Doherty and her team ran a great campaign. Her victory flipped a seat that had been held by an opponent of reproductive freedom, marking the second time this has occurred during this special election cycle. This is not by coincidence. Her win is further proof that voters across the state, not just in Boston, Cambridge, and Somerville, believe in removing barriers to reproductive health care. We hope her victory inspires other pro-choice candidates to run for office in similar districts.
“Carol has an exceptional track record of protecting reproductive freedom from anti-choice attacks. In 1986, she successfully ran the campaign against a statewide ballot question which, if adopted, would have given the legislature the power to severely limit access to abortion in Massachusetts. I look forward to working with her to expand access to essential reproductive health care services for the women and families of the 3rd Bristol District and beyond.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated barriers to abortion care in Massachusetts. Coupled with the rise of anti-choice attacks across the country, it’s more important than ever to have state legislators who will protect reproductive freedom and remove harmful barriers to essential reproductive health care. As a strong supporter of the ROE Act, Carol’s new constituents can count on her to be an advocate for their bodily autonomy.”
