When it comes to Repro Rights, Minogue Can’t Be Trusted
BOSTON - At last night’s gubernatorial debate, Republican candidate Mike Minogue again showed Massachusetts voters that his anti-abortion stance proves he is not fit to be the governor that Massachusetts deserves. As a donor to the staunchly anti-abortion organization, Massachusetts Family Institute, Mike Minogue’s record shows he cannot be trusted to protect and defend abortion access. Since the Trump-appointed Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, 1 in 3 women have lost access to abortion in their home state, and Massachusetts stands as a beacon of access for abortion and other sexual and reproductive health care.
Statement from Taylor St. Germain, Co-Interim Executive Director of Reproductive Equity Now:
“As our reproductive freedoms face relentless attacks from an anti-abortion federal administration, Massachusetts cannot trust anti-abortion politicians whose positions put our rights and access to care at risk. We need leaders who are unequivocal about where they stand—and who are proud to fight for the reproductive freedoms Massachusetts residents want and deserve.
“We know where Mike Minogue stands. He is proudly anti-abortion. He gave Donald Trump a million dollars after he bragged about overturning Roe v. Wade and stripped abortion access from one in three women in this country.
“At a moment when anti-abortion politicians across the country are relentlessly working to strip away our rights, Massachusetts needs and deserves a governor who will boldly and proactively fight to expand reproductive freedom and keep deeply personal health care decisions where they belong: with patients, not politicians. Governor Maura Healey has thoroughly demonstrated that commitment through her record and her agenda, and that is why we are proud to stand by in her re-election for Governor.”
Statement from Dominique Lee, President of the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts:
“Mike Minogue has spent years using his personal foundation to bankroll organizations that promote junk science and dangerous rhetoric and that undermine the health and safety of women and LGBTQ people. Massachusetts cannot trust Mike Minogue to steward any of our tax dollars to improve or protect reproductive health or abortion access when he has consistently funded efforts that intentionally mislead and restrict access to that very care. At a time when fake clinics already outnumber reproductive health centers in Massachusetts by nearly three to one, his support for anti-abortion organizations raises serious concerns about whose interests he would serve.
In her first term, Governor Healey has taken decisive action to protect Planned Parenthood patients, providers, and the people who rely on time-sensitive, quality reproductive health care. She is the Governor we trust to lead and deliver on reproductive health, rights, and justice at a time when Donald Trump and Mike Minogue want to roll it back.”
Public tax records and reporting show that the Michael and Renee Minogue Foundation has donated thousands of dollars to the Massachusetts Family Institute and thousands of dollars to PragerUthe Minogue Foundation continues to list the Prager University Foundation among its past and current recipients. When asked about the contribution, Mike Minogue said, “a very good resource.”
PragerU’s messages to kids and families include:
Saying abortions are “not moral” and attacking the validity of reproductive freedom.
Calling feminism “the root of so many evils and ills in our society.”
Blaming immigrants for crime, condemning multiculturalism, and stereotyping all immigrants as violent criminals.
Attacking the LGBTQ+ community, claiming that kids are only identifying because it is “trendy,” that the community is trying to “pervert” the minds of children, and saying “gay people shouldn’t be proud to be gay.”
Stating that “kids graduating high school barely know how to read and write but able to list off 97 genders,” condemning any teaching about global warming, history of racism and sexism in the US, and seemingly calling for an end to sexual education.
Pushing vaccine misinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic, calling life-saving vaccines “genetic engineering modification,” and promoting a speaker that claims they developed lung cancer from vaccines and that you shouldn’t trust your doctor.
Gov. Maura Healey has an incredibly strong record when it comes to defending and expanding abortion and reproductive health care access in Massachusetts. As governor, Maura Healey took proactive action by:
Signing an update to the strongest Shield Law, strengthening protections for health care providers and patients
Strengthening abortion protections through the Prioritizing Patient Access to Care Act to ensure that deeply personal medical decisions are made between a patient and their doctor, not politicians
Stockpiling mifepristone as threats to medication abortion continue
Investing in reproductive health providers and abortion access funds
Signing an Executive Order protecting access to emergency abortion care
Making over-the-counter contraception more accessible to people on MassHealth
