Statement on the 2020 Election Results

BOSTON, Mass.– Rebecca Hart Holder, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, the Commonwealth’s leading grassroots pro-choice advocacy organization, issued the following statement on the results of the 2020 election:

“This morning we woke up, just as we did on Primary Day and during our special elections, clear that across the Commonwealth supporting reproductive freedom and the ROE Act are winning issues. Every single incumbent who has supported the ROE Act won their race, and in many instances, fended off anti-abortion opponents. The pro-choice movement did not just maintain its advantage in the legislature, we expanded it when John Cronin defeated incumbent State Senator Dean Tran, one of the most anti-choice members of the state legislature.

“Over and over, Bay State voters have made their support for the ROE Act clear by electing leaders who are committed to removing politically-motivated barriers to abortion care. As we continue to navigate the uncertainty around who our next president is, we are grateful that our lawmakers have committed to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom here in Massachusetts. We look forward to working with the pro-choice champions in the state legislature to remove barriers to abortion care by passing the ROE Act. Now is the time for the Commonwealth to lead.

“Like the rest of the country, we eagerly await the results of the presidential election. For nearly four years, the Trump administration has attacked reproductive freedom, culminating with the anti-democratic confirmation of Justice Amy Coney Barrett to the United States Supreme Court.  Now President Trump is trying to sow fear and confusion about the outcome of the election in order to cling on to power. The votes must be fully counted before any winner is declared. Our rights depend on it.”
