Reproductive Equity Now Statement on Trump's Reinstatement of the Global Gag Rule on Abortion Care

BOSTON (January 24, 2025) – Reproductive Equity Now President Rebecca Hart Holder released the following statement this evening after President Donald Trump reinstated the Mexico City policy, or the “global gag rule.” This dangerous anti-abortion policy prevents foreign organizations that receive U.S. global health assistance from providing information, referrals, or services for abortion care. It also prevents these organizations from advocating for abortion access in their respective country.

“Reinstating the Mexico City policy will have deadly consequences for people across the globe. It’s that horrifyingly simple,” said Rebecca Hart Holder, President of Reproductive Equity Now. “The United States is a vital partner to health care providers and organizations around the world, and robbing those frontline providers of their ability to provide the full spectrum of reproductive health care, and even information about people’s options, will result in people losing their lives to pregnancy complications. Trump is not satisfied with the United States’ appalling maternal mortality statistics; he is intent on worsening maternal health care on an international scale. The decision to reinstate this policy is appalling and morally depraved.”
