Reproductive Equity Now Statement on Nomination of Matt Gaetz to Serve as U.S. Attorney General

BOSTON (November 13, 2024) – Following the news that President-elect Donald Trump intends to nominate Congressman Matt Gaetz of Florida to serve as United States Attorney General, Rebecca Hart Holder, President of Reproductive Equity Now, released the following statement:

“It is both shocking and embarrassing to nominate Matt Gaetz to serve as the Attorney General of the United States. Anti-abortion politicians and activists have a close and personal ally in Trump’s latest nominee. We have serious and legitimate reason to believe that Matt Gaetz will carry out Donald Trump and J.D. Vance’s plan to decimate abortion access nationwide by utilizing the power of the Department of Justice to enforce the Comstock Act. We call on the Senate to do their due diligence, recognize the threat that Gaetz poses to abortion access, and protect the American people from an extremist politician who is unfit to serve as the top prosecutorial authority of this nation.”

Matt Gaetz’s record on abortion and reproductive freedom:

  • Repeatedly voted against legislation to protect access to abortion care

  • Co-sponsored legislation designed to interrupt care to manage pregnancy loss (H.R. 26, 2023)

  • Voted in favor of arbitrary restrictions on abortion care such as an ultrasound mandate and a 24-hour waiting period when serving in the Florida State House

  • Made national headlines when he called supporters of bodily autonomy and abortion access “fat and ugly.”
