Reproductive Equity Now Statement on Confirmation of Elizabeth Dewar to MA Supreme Judicial Court

Dewar to bring commitment to justice, reproductive freedom to SJC bench

BOSTON (January 10, 2024) – Reproductive Equity Now President Rebecca Hart Holder released the following statement today after the Governor’s Council unanimously confirmed former State Solicitor Elizabeth (Bessie) Dewar to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.

Rebecca Hart Holder, President of Reproductive Equity Now: “After the fall of Roe v. Wade, building a Supreme Judicial Court bench that is committed to reproductive justice has never been more critical. Elizabeth (Bessie) Dewar will bring a wealth of legal expertise to the Supreme Judicial Court, including her demonstrated commitment to combating anti-abortion attacks and advancing reproductive equity throughout Massachusetts. Amongst her many achievements, as State Solicitor, Bessie authored briefs against the Texas six-week abortion ban and bounty hunter law, and contributed to numerous multistate briefs filed in cases across the country regarding abortion access and gender-affirming care. We are thrilled about Bessie’s unanimous confirmation to the bench and are confident that her expertise will contribute to protecting and advancing reproductive freedom in the Commonwealth.”
