Reproductive Equity Now Statement Ahead of Public Hearing on New Hampshire Resolution Affirming Right to Abortion
New Hampshire is the only state in New England without explicit legal protections for abortion in its state law or constitution
CONCORD, NH (February 19, 2025) – Reproductive Equity Now President Rebecca Hart Holder released the following statement today as the House Health, Human Services and Elderly Affairs Committee prepares to hold a hearing on HCR 7, a resolution that would affirm abortion as health care protected under state law.
“Granite Staters overwhelmingly support reproductive freedom and the right to abortion in New Hampshire and in every state across the country. They understand that access to basic and essential health care is fundamental to guaranteeing our personal freedoms and our ability to control our bodies, lives, and futures. HCR 7 offers New Hampshire’s elected leaders an opportunity to show their constituents that they hear them. The House can make a statement that it understands abortion is health care, respects a person's right to bodily autonomy, and, as politicians, will not step in between health care decisions that should be made between a patient and their doctor. We urge the House Health, Human Services and Elderly Affairs Committee to recommend in favor of this bill and collectively affirm abortion is health care.”
Currently, New Hampshire is the only state in New England without explicit legal protections for abortion in its state law or constitution, therefore, leaving the door open for lawmakers to further restrict the right to abortion care— despite 78% of Granite Staters believing that their should be a right to get an abortion in every state in the United States. If passed, HCR 7 would affirm abortion as health care in New Hampshire, and send a message to Granite Staters that their elected leaders will stand up for their freedoms.
