Reproductive Equity Now Endorses Reproductive Health Care Champion Maura Healey for Massachusetts Governor
Healey was the first statewide official to endorse the ROE Act, which codified abortion protections into MA state law
BOSTON (May 24, 2022) – As abortion rights are under attack in states across the country, Reproductive Equity Now today endorsed Maura Healey for Massachusetts Governor. Healey is a reproductive equity champion, who has advocated for abortion access in the Commonwealth and stood up to restrictive and hostile abortion laws in states throughout the country.

While state legislatures across the country continue their hostile rollback of abortion rights, our Commonwealth will remain a beacon for reproductive freedom with Governor Healey at the helm.”

Amid the looming erosion of reproductive rights at the federal level, Massachusetts is lucky to have two pro-reproductive equity candidates in the race. Maura Healey’s decades-long prioritization of and stalwart advocacy for advancing reproductive equity, however, set her apart as a demonstrated leader on this issue.
Healey was the first statewide official to endorse the ROE Act in Massachusetts, legislation that codified abortion protections into state law and ensured that abortion will remain legal in Massachusetts, no matter what the Supreme Court decides in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization this summer. In June 2019, Healey testified before the Massachusetts Joint Committee on the Judiciary in support of the legislation.
Healey’s work to defend abortion access has extended far beyond Massachusetts’ borders. Last year, as attorney general, Healey joined a coalition of 24 attorneys general in filing an amicus brief opposing Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban, which is now before the U.S. Supreme Court and poses an existential threat to federal abortion protections. In response to the unconstitutional six-week abortion ban that went into effect in Texas, Healey led a coalition of 24 attorneys general in filing an amicus brief in support of the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) challenge to the restrictive abortion law.
Healey has led on reproductive freedom issues throughout her career. Before serving as attorney general, she led investigations into dangerous and deceptive crisis pregnancy centers and worked to ensure the safety of abortion providers throughout the Commonwealth.
