Reproductive Freedom a Major Winner in Boston Elections
BOSTON–NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, the Commonwealth’s leading reproductive freedom advocacy organization, is proud to announce that thus far, 10 City Champions won their general election races and will be representing their communities in Boston City Hall.
The winners include Mayor-elect Michelle Wu, City Councilors Ricardo Arroyo, Kenzie Bok, Liz Breadon, Lydia Edwards, and Julia Mejia, and newly elected City Council members Tania Anderson, Kendra Hicks, Ruthzee Louijeune, and Brian Worrell. It remains to be seen if City Champions David Halbert and Carla Monteiro will win the remaining At-Large Council seats, but as things stand now, 70 percent of the elected leaders at City Hall will be NARAL MA City Champions.
“I’m pleased to congratulate Mayor-elect Michelle Wu and all of our winning City Champions on running great campaigns. Because of today’s votes, Boston City Hall will be led by a majority of elected officials who are committed to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom. As a Boston resident myself, I realize how significant of a milestone this is for our city, and I am incredibly proud of the future that we are building. Boston will lead the country in promoting reproductive freedom and equity,” said Rebecca Hart Holder, Executive Director of NARAL MA.
NARAL MA unveiled the City Champion Pledge in early August, and over 120 candidates from across the Commonwealth have signed on, including 23 from Boston alone. Candidates who took the pledge committed to protecting every person’s right to access the full range of reproductive health care options and supporting seven key policies that promote and expand reproductive freedom.
