Statement from Rebecca Hart Holder on Ruling in Trump v. Pennsylvania
BOSTON, Mass. – Rebecca Hart Holder, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, the Commonwealth’s leading grassroots, pro-choice political advocacy organization, issued the following statement in response to today’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Trump v. Pennsylvania:
“Today’s decision is an unacceptable infringement on the bodily autonomy of countless Americans, and an attack on reproductive freedom. It is unconscionable that the Court would allow the Trump administration’s reckless attacks on birth control to take effect. Everybody deserves access to birth control, and the personal views of your boss should not be allowed to deny critically important birth control coverage. This is yet another example of this administration’s obsession with controlling women’s bodies and denying them the ability to be in charge of their own lives and futures.
“When the Trump administration first issued these exemptions in 2017, we know it could be disastrous, so we fought to get the ACCESS bill signed into law. In light of today’s decision, we are especially grateful to our allies in the State Legislature who acted quickly to pass comprehensive birth control coverage for Bay Staters. The ACCESS law mandates that all Massachusetts-regulated health insurers cover birth control with no copays or cost-sharing requirements, meaning most Bay Staters are protected from today’s ruling. As a healthcare trend setter, we believe it is essential that Massachusetts be an example for other states to follow, and lead the efforts to push back against this anti-choice attack by making it clear that birth control is healthcare, and healthcare is a right.
“NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts will remain vigilant against federal efforts to undermine our reproductive freedom and stay committed to working with our elected leaders to ensure that Massachusetts pushes back against these shameful attacks.”
